Extended Reality (XR) is the umbrella term for immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) and technologies that play on other senses such as haptic technology and spatial audio.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented Reality (AR) is the real world with a layer of virtual content overlaid on top. Think of the lenses on Snapchat. Or Pokemon appearing on camera in Pokemon Go.

Mixed Reality (MR)

Mixed reality (MR) can be thought of as an upgraded form of augmented reality. AR on steroids. Instead of simply an overlay, mixed reality is when the real and virtual world can interact. The physical world environment’s physics affect the virtual objects. The virtual objects are spatially aware and responsive to the physical world.

Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual Reality (VR) is a completely immersive artificial environment created with technology. To help with the immersion, VR headsets completely cover your eyesight. In full virtual reality you have no sense of the real world. You’re only hearing, seeing, smelling, and feeling the virtual world. Current technology often just immerses you with sight and sound.
