Microsoft Buying Activision Blizzard

Microsoft is purchasing Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, which makes it the largest gaming acquisition in history. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the gaming company will play a vital role in the development of future Metaverse platforms. The full deal is expected to happen in 2023. Activision Blizzard has popular games such as Call of DutyOverwatch, World of WarcraftDiablo and Candy Crush.

Many will remember Google being made fun of for their Google Glasses back in the early 2010s. Now that the mixed reality industry is picking up with better technology, Google is reportedly getting back into developing its own mixed reality glasses for 2024. To keep the glasses light, the company might rely on their data centers to send data to the glasses via internet connection, rather than have all the computing done on the device. Bernard Kress, the principal optical architect on Microsoft’s HoloLens team, left to become Director of XR Engineering at Google Labs to help with the project. It’s codenamed Project Iris.
