First VR Oscar Nomination ‘Pearl’ Film

‘Pearl’, a short VR film by Google, is being added to the list of Animated Movie category for the Oscars.

Another short film by Occulus, ‘Henry’ won an Emmy in the VR category last year. Henry was named ‘best outstanding original interactive program’ which was a category added in 2013.

“When we set out to make Henry, it was a step into the unknown world of making an emotional VR movie. While we didn’t know what the outcome was going to be, we were excited about the possibilities,” Ramiro Lopez Dau, Director of Henry, posted to the Occulus blog.

Now, the 89th annual Academy Awards is adding VR into its nominees.

The film has a duration of six minutes and can be watched through YouTube via a VR headset. The Oscar ceremony will take place February 26th.
